This collection documents the history of the university through a variety of records produced, authorized or required by the school’s administration, beginning with the charters that founded the Pittsburgh Academy and Western University of Pennsylvania. These were both scanned courtesy of Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Pennsylvania State Archives.
Chancellor’s Reports, which focused on academics, athletics, capital projects and enrollment, were provided annually or biennially and provide a summary of the status of the university. Occasionally these reports revealed the University’s role or response to external events in the country and the world, including the great influenza epidemic of 1918, World War I, and the Great Depression. This collection includes Chancellor’s Reports for the following years: 1893-1894, 1897, 1899-1900, 1902, 1904-1912, 1915-1919, 1921-1922, 1924, 1926, 1930, 1932, 1934, 1936, and 1938.
The Catalogues of the Western University of Pennsylvania and the Catalogues of the University of Pittsburgh describe in detail admission and academic requirements, classes, University Calendar, campus information, faculty, administrators and announcements for the year. Also known as “Course Catalogs,” this publication provides a snapshot of academic life at Pitt and, from the late 1890s to 1927, even offer a register of continuing students with such biographical information as their hometown and the high school or preparatory school they attended. This collection includes the earliest known catalogue from 1861/62 through the 1926/1927 academic year.
The University of Pittsburgh Fact Book began in 1970/71 as a report to give University administrators basic and accurate facts and statistics about the University; however, as it gained a wider distribution, the books provided concise and relevant information on characteristics and strengths of the University. This collection includes Fact Books from 1970 to 1995 and issues from 1996 to the present can be found at the Office of Institutional Research.
The earliest known press release from the University of Pittsburgh was issued on September 5, 1952. Over the years, the press releases have been called News from the University of Pittsburgh, News Releases, University News, and News from Pitt, but have always been issued from the office that is currently called the Office of Public Affairs. The press releases contain newsworthy announcements of campus events, renowned visitors, and special achievements of students, faculty and staff. This collection contains all of the press releases, over 16,000 total, from September 5, 1952 to December 20, 2002. More recent press releases can be found at the Office of Public Affairs.
