V nej boli uzavret6 mnoh6 dohody medzi Bielymi a Indidnmi. Nearby was located the famous Inclian village of Logstown, where many treatie6 were made between the Indians and the vhites. here George Washington visited to conter with the indians in 1753. It is said the first white settlers in Beaver County was located in this area. Ambridge (Old Economy) was the home, also, of the Harmony Society which for almost a century was an experiment in Christian socialism in America. Less than four years after the American Bridge Company began erection of the tirst plan in Ambridge in 1902, the Divine Redeemer Church, a Roman Catholic Slovak parish was organized to meet the religious needs of the Slovak speaking people who were moving into this new indclustriai community. On October 1, 1906 Bishop Regis Canevin of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, approved the establishment of a Slovak Parish in Ambridge. The parish was established by Father John Kubacki, pastor of St. Veronica Roman Catholic Church. Services were conducted in the basemenL of a building adjacent to the present church, the following year without a name designation being given to the parish. At the time of the church's establishment Father Kubacki was the only Catholic priest in Ambridge. The appointment of Father Joseph Pospech, as pastor, and the naming of the parish, Divine Redeemer, occurred April 2, 1907. A plot of land, 60 feet by 110 feet deep, located on Merchant Street, and a part of the Ambridge Land Company lots was purchased June 17, 1910 for the purpose of building a new church. The trustees, whose names appear on the land deed, were: Charles Kristufek, Ambrose Blanarik, Wilhelm Girgaish, Nick Trensayin, Andrew Dzvonik, John Csurny, Alexander Oravetz, and Andrew Bires. The only living trustee of this group is Andrew Bires. Other living Catholic Slovak pioneers who helped organize the parish are:..Mrs. Hedviga Franek Bobek, Andrew Czulak, George Dzvonik, Valent Hovanec, Mrs. Johanna Istocin, John Kerzan, Mrs. John Mihalski, Anton Papson, Mrs. Joseph Rosenberger and Peter Svegel. Susanna Dzvonik, daughter of Andrew Dzvonik and Mary Martin Dzvonik, was the first person to have her baptism recorded on October 27, 1906. The first marriage took place on February 11, 1907 between Michael Rabovsky and Elizabeth Jenca. Records reveal on March 30,1907 that SLephen Cajka was the first person to be buried trom Divine Redeemer Church. The "First", First Communion Class in the parish took place May 9, 1901. Those listed participating were: Mary Bires, Anna Bires, Mary Prus, Mary Turk, Anthony Turk, Rudolphn tasny. Two parishes were formed from the origina. Divine Redeemer Church. They were St. Staniblaus (Polish) and Holy Trinity (Croatian) of Ambridge. Pastors who have served Divine Redeemer Church:from 1906, - 1916 in addition to k'athers Kubacki and Pospech, have been: rathers LouLs Laus, D.D.; P. Chrysost,m, O.P'.M. Cap., U. 1. Lolivka; Elias Gusic; B. Bekovac; A. hRunicky; IFr. Ransinger; J. Kerchnyak; J. Supinski; niobert Paulovits; Peter Cancarevic; and Rev. 1. S. Herkei. PASTORATE OF REV. I. S. HERKEL It was under the pastorate of Rev. I. S. Herkei that the congregation looked forward to an expanding future. p'r. H erkel began serving the parish on July 25, 1916. Father's first project of expansion was to purchase a home to be used as the rectory. The present church building was erected in 1918 at 239 Merchant Street. Rt. Rev. Regis Canevin, Bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese, laid the corner stone on May 30, 1918 and dedicated the church on November 30, 1918. As the parish continued to grow a plot of land on Big Sewickley Creek Road was purchased jointly with St. Veronica and St. Stanislaus parishes of Ambridge in 1919 to be used as a Catholic Cemetery. In 1920 the Davis Hotel across the street from the church was bought and converLed into a school and convent. The Parish School was opened in September 1921. The School Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Mt. Assissi, Bellevue, Pennsylvania, took charge of the school and have continued to do so successfully to the present time. Through their kind direction and encouragement six of our young women have entered the religious life. They have also been responsible for the organizing of three choirs and fostering the proper and elegant liturgical music. The third floor of the school served as a convent temporarily until January, 1927 when the present convent adjoining the church was completed. RE-DIVINE REDEEMER CHURCH Stone Sculpture Above Door Under Father Herkel's leadership the Young Ladies' Sodality, the Holy Name Society, St. George's Cadets, the Rosary Society and the Christian Mothers groups were organized. The Sodality, the Holy Name Society, the Christian Mothers and the Rosary Society have continued to remain active until the present time. Father Herkel closed his twenty-five-year pastorate in Ambridge in October, 1941 when he was transferred to Holy Trinity Parish, Ford City, Pennsylvania, where he continued to serve the Slovak people until his death September 13, 1950. ADMINISTRATION OF REV JOHN M. ROSTAS Rev. John M. Rostas, former pastor of Sts. Mary and Ann, Marianna, Pennsylvania, succeeded lather HerkeT on October 29, 1941. The administration of Father Rostas has been one of renovation and reorganization. The rectory was remodeled to such an extent that it has the appearance of a new home. The convent was repaired and redecorated. New furnaces were installed in the rectory, school, church and convent. A new addition was built adjoining the church. This new structure enlarged the present sacristy, added increased storage space for churcli properties, and included a two car garage. The grounds around the church and the cemetery were properly landscaped. A hand carved stone was set above newly purchased doors for the church. The carving depicts the crucified Redeemer with open arms extended to all classes of people, the strong and Ihealthy, the blind, infirm, etc., against an industrial background, Ohio River which passes by, and steel mills typical of Beaver Valley. On Sunday, June 11, 1944 a Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving was offered commemorating the burning of the church mortgage. In 1949 a new Wurlitzer organ was purchased. The reconstruction program reached the climax when the interior of the church was remodeled and decorated. The sanctuary is of such artistic merit that it makes Divine Redeemer one of the most beautiful churches in Beaver Valley. Three new altars and the sedilia were made of solid harvest oak by the Cook-Anderson Co. A new tabernacle, the focal point of our worship, adorned the new main altar. Directly above the main altar is a huge original painting of Christ the Redeemer, High Priest and King. Christ is surrounded by His Mother and St. John the Baptist, the forerunner, and the twelve apostles. Each apostle carries a symbol that is traditionally characteristic of his life or martyrdom. Around the proscenium arch is a decorative design illustrating the seven sacraments. The shrine of the Blessed Mother is decorated with the Mystic Rose; while St. Joseh's shrine hathe lily of purity, a token of his saintly character. The side altar shrines of the Blessed Mothei and St. Joseph and the Stations of the Cross are wood carvings by Fiegeler of Long Island, IN. -Y. The Communion Railing, candelabra, sanctuary lamp and votive light stand are made of hammerecd wrought iron. The lighting system was renovated by installing recessed tixtures. Light is the symbol of the Light which is Christ. Another achievement in Father Rostas' career was the federating of the women i organizations of the Parish into the National Council of Catholic Women. bather cooperated with the request of His Excellency John f'. Deardon, -ishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh by' establishing a Parish council at Divine Redeemer Church on October 23, 19,53. The Council itself is an information structure which makes known committee work recommendea and directed by His Excellency to inspire and assist catholic women to put Christ s principles into daily living. The Christian Mothers Society; the Rosary Society; the Young Ladies Sodality; the - irst Catholic Slovak Ladies lUnion, Branch 242; and the Ladies Pennsylvania Rtoman and Greek Catlolic Union, Branch 120, comprise our Council. A brief summary will reveal that the Council can report an outstanding list of projects and activities:- an increase in attendance at Days of Recollection and Retreats; Pilgrimages; spiritual bouquets; donations to foreign missions and V incenLian Home of Incurables; assistance to local community welfare drives; courses in Red Cross Home Nursing and First Aid classes; First F riday breakfasts for school children; copies of catholic literature placed at local public Library each month; used and new clothing drives to missions; communion dresses, medical supplies to missions, and Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. We are grateful to Father Rostas for his zeal and interest in Divine Redeemer Church. Through his untiring efforts he has enhanced the spiritual and material beauty of our parish. God has been gracious to us during the past fifty years. Our founders looked but in one direction... forward to the future. They were confident of their ability to overcome difficulty and to build a church and parish that would justify their faith and enthusiasm. Taking inspiration from our brilliant past, let us turn our eyes to the future with renewed determination to sow seeds that will yield a bountiful harvest for God and Country. A. M. D. G.
