FRONT VIEW OF THE NEW ST. GABRIEL ARCHANGEL SLOVAK CHURCH Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15212 Architects: Loeffler, Johnson, Lundberg and Associates - Pittsburgh, Pa. Contractor: Landau Brothers Building Co. - Pittsburgh, Pa. Photograph - Andrew Holovanisin, Jr. Oct 7eeC Cc Standing atop a wooded hillside overlooking Manchester, the new Saint Gabriel Church may be seen from a great distance. While the brown and tan of its shingles and brick blend with the colors of the Earth, it reaches heavenward with Tower and Cross, contrasting them against the sky. Approach to the main entrance is through a garden area, which provides an opportunity to partake of a long and beautiful view toward Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle, two miles away to the Southeast. Upon entering the Church, one finds the major areas of Narthex, Nave and Sanctuary to be a single volume of space, but each having some definition from the next by a change of materials or a change of levels. The Church plan is organized along two intersecting axes, which form a Cross. Beginning with the Baptistry and Narthex, the major axis proceeds down the center aisle and ends in the apse at the Bishop's chair. The second axis begins in the Church Tower at the Tabernacle and ends with the Choir at the large glass block window, donated by the Pittsburgh Corning Glass Company in memory of Elmer A. Lundberg, one of the Architects. At the intersection of the axes, the most important place in the Church, is the Altar. Glowing with illumination from a skylight above, the simple lines of this marble Altar have a strength and dignity appropriate to its function as the Altar of Sacrifice and the Table of Christ's Supper. Skylighting also floods the Baptismal Font and the Tabernacle, accenting the beginning points of the two axes and complementing the Altar as it rests at the focal point of the Church. GABRIELA ARCHANJELA V NORTH SIDE PITTSBURGH, PA. Pova iac, e slovensk6 osady v Amerike sa za6ali zakladat' v roku 1882, naga osada sv. Gabriela Archanjela mSie byt' hrdd ie jej priekopnici neostali pozadu, ale ui pred sedemdesiatimi rokami dali sa do prdce aby jej dali zdklad. Ked' dnes poddvame tieto krdtke dejiny, berieme do ohl'adu pomery, v ak ch ni6 l'ud a ini prist'ahovalci tu 2ili pred 70 rokami, ked' nemali iadn ch vihod, ak6 my dnes po ivame a hoci trpeli na mnoh6 nedostatky, predsa mali najviTiu starost', aby postavili svoj vlastny kostol. Do tejto kategorie patria aj priekopnici a zakladatelia nagej osady sv. Gabriela Archanjela. Slov6ci z ndtnych potrieb za6ali si zakladat' svoje v nemoci a smrti podporujice spolky. A v tomto ohl'ade vynikli najmi zakladatelia spolku sv. Michala Archanjela, Cisla 2. Preto e cestovania do kostola sv. Dp. Andrej Pohorenec, ktor' vtedy ui'inkoval v osade ssv. Cyrila a Metoda v Charleroi, Pa., a potom zomrel v McKees Rocks Pa., bol poveren' sostavit' popis, cize cenzius osady. Zistilo sa, e v tejto Easti Allegheny City, Pa., b'valo do 200 slovensk'ch rodin a do 300 jednotlivcov. Na tomto zaklade biskup Phelan povolil stavbu kostola. Ako sme spomenuli, meno sv. Michala neschvilili, lebo ui jestvo vali slovensk6 osady sv. Michala v Braddock a Munhall, Pa. Farnici sa usilovali ndjst' slovensk6ho duchovn6ho. Obrdtili sa na dp. Jdna Stasa, ktor im odporfi6al dp. Jozefa Martin6eka, ale ten e'te nemohol prist' zo Slovenska. Tie im odporfi6al dp. Antona Berhely-ho a dp. Ferdinanda Prikazk6ho, roddka zo Skalice, kde sa narodil v roku 1868. Osada bola inkorporovand 31. m;ja 1903 v Common Pleas No. 2 Courte Sudcom Elliott Rodgersom. Father Prikazky zavital do osady 15 oktobra 1903. V pokladnici osady bolo $115.23. Farnost' dlhovala $13,556.30 osadn'm spolkom a jednotlivcom a $10,000. Kleinovej Banke. Fara bola zakfipena v oktobri S1907 za obnos $7,500.00. Zavedenie'koly. 4 Prichod sestier sv. Franti'ka. 4 Po mnohom vyjednavani, a pomoci osv. p. biskupa Jozefa M. Koudelku a Father Juliusa Vranu, Father Prikazky dogikoval'kolsk6 sestry sv. Senator Hugh Scott 25. aprila 1963 z prile2itosti ich Zlat6ho Jubilea v Eisle 58. (Strana 6395) pod titulom "The Golden Anniversary of the Slovak Sisters of Third Order of St. Francis In America". Sestry tie mali svoj Materinec pri nagej osade a' si vybudovali Materinec a vys'iu gkolu Mt. Assisi Academy, ktord bola uznata 8. februara 1932 9titom Pennsylvania. V osade sa d'alej pokra6ovalo a dbalo o vichovu mlAde e a tie za6al prekvitat' aj rehol'n a kiazsk 2ivot. Prichod Slovensk ch Otcov Frantiskinov. Osada ute'ene pokra6ovala. Av'ak v sviatok V'etkych Svit'ch 1. novembra 1927, Father Prikazky bol povolan' do nemocnice udelit' sviatosti umierajiemu osadnikovi. Na ceste prechladol', dostal zapalenie pl'ic a zomrel 10. novembra 1927. Bol pochovany na cintorine sv. Jozefa vo West View, Pa., kde boli pochovani aj mnohi osadnici pred zakfipenim diecezilneho cintorina za doby osv. p. biskupa John Deardena, terajgieho Detroitsk6ho Arcibiskupa a Kardindla. Po smrti Father Prikazk6ho osadu spravovali Slovenski Otcovia Franti9kani z Avalon, Pa. Prichod Father George M. Malinaka. Diia 19. janudra 1928 osv. p. biskup Hugh C. Boyle vymenoval za duchovn6ho nasej osady Father George M. Malinaka, rodaka z Johnstown, Pa., ktor' ukinkoval v osade sv. Ru'enca v Republic, Pa. On tie' dbal o mlAde a hudbu. John Sedldk, Tom6 B. Harnyak, Ladislav Kolakowski, Andrej Suran, Pavel Simko, William Pisar6ik, Rudolf Halvonik, Jozef Hmelyar, Andrej Horvath, Louis Malindzak, Stefan Kandra, Michal -Kubacky, George A. Jurica, Jdn Palko, a Francis Koryak. 'O6inkovanie Father Jozefa Straku. Potom bol prvAm predsedom Svizu Slovensk ch Kiiazov Pittsburgh skej Diec6zie a jedn m zo zakladatel'ov Slovenskych Diiov, teda i on v tom pokra'oval. Msgr. Kushner oslavoval v roku 1971 svoje Zlate Jubileum kitazstva na zaslU ilom odpo6inku. Prichod a iiinkovanie Father George A. Juricu. V roku 1968 po preloieni Father Pisar6ika do Donora, Pa., za nageho duchovn6ho bol vymenovan' osv. p. biskupom John J. Wrightom, teraj9im Kardindlom vo Vatikane, nds teraji obl'ibenjV duchovn Father George A. Jurica, roddk z Braddock, Pa., ktor' bol u nas predt'm kapl6nom, teda poznal mnohkch osadnikov a aj potreby osady. Pre Father Juricu nastala vel'ka iloha a sice, dostat' povolenie ku stavbe nov6ho kostola. Pova'iac dnes stav Katolikov v Amerike, kde mnohe kostoly si na ipadku, t'aiko bolo sa osv. p. biskupovi Vincentovi Leonardovi rozhodnit' dat' povolenie ku stavbe nov6ho kostola, ked'ie pred rokami zaloiene osady v tkchto nepriazniv ch a Cirkvi'kodiacich pomeroch ukazali sa 6padkom. Av'ak osv. p. biskup Leonard a Diecezdlna Rada, vidiac odu'evnenie Father Juricu a na'ich osadnikov kone'ne dala sihlas ku stavbe nov6ho kostola. Pote'ilo n6s iba to. e n6 mily priatel', Jeho Eminencia John J. Kardindl Wright odsluil poslednk raz sv. omgu v starom kostole 13. aprila 1969. Nastala t'a2kd iloha zariadenia do'asn6ho kostola, 6o Father Jurica s pomocou osadneho vkboru rychle previedol a napnul v9etky sily, aby sa osada udriala a ku stavbe nov6ho kostola prikro6ilo, 6o sa uskuto'nilo r'chle a bezvadne v halle osadnej gkoly. Av9ak stale sme Eakali na schvdlenie stavby nov6ho kostola, 6o ndm zapri6iiovalo vel'a starosti. Father Jurica v9ak neztratil d6veru a pilne a usilovne d'alej pracoval a osadnikov povzbudzoval ku vytrvalosti. Kone6ne nadi'iel radostnr det, ie osv. p. biskup Vincent Leonard schv6lil stavbu nov6ho kostola. Bol to vel'mi radostny deii, ked' bol posviten rohov' kamei v Defi Vd'akyvzdania, 25. novembra. Acprdve bolo nepriazniv6 po6asie, osv. p. biskup Vincent Leonard siastnil sa tejto historickej posviacky. Ndp. msgr. Father Bernard J. Rabik, S.T.D. 325 ~C~N A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP LEONARD The day has come for the dedication of the new church of Saint Gabriel Archangel Slovak Parish, Pittsburgh. The parishioners have looked forward for a long time to this event. This church is a splendid tribute to their faith in that they have been willing to make the financial sacrifices necessary for its completion. It is also a happy coincidence that the dedication of the church should coincide with the Seventieth Anniversary of the founding of the parish. In these past seventy years there were, no doubt, many zealous priests, sisters, and parishioners who contributed to the life of the parish. It would be difficult to point out any one particular person to whom special recognition should be given. It would be better if this occasion of the dedication of the new church be considered a time to pay tribute to all the devout, loyal, and faithful priests, sisters, and laity who have made up this parish these past seventy years. May God's blessing be on all those who in any way contributed to the construction of this church and may it serve the parishioners of Saint Gabriel's for many years to come. Stroyne hCN 7 Kindness May God ST. GABRIEL'S CHURCH 2430 CALIFORNIA AVENUE PITTSBURGH, PA. 15212 321-1586 April, 1972 The success of any project, is the constant cooperation of its workers. It takes time, prayer, and perseverance to attain the goal which is to be achieved. The Patron, to whom this Church is dedicated, St. Gabriel the Archangel, has constantly been the stand-in before God for the parishioners, who have invoked his help to have and keep for the Slovak speaking people, the Church in which they can worship, and pray, in the tongue they well understand. The founders of this parish had in mind a place of worship for their kind of people, which, through hardships, sacrifices, had contributed much to its progress. We must admire their deep faith, the Slovak culture and traditions, which they brought with them. It was their love for their Church - their Slovak heritage - which prompted them to found this Slovak parish. We admire their Slovak Catholic spirit which inspired them to labor "Za Boha a Narod" - for God and Country. Much more could be said of the further hardships, frustrations and sacrifices of the parishioners endured in the past few years, but because of their endeavors, we celebrate today this glorious occasion - the Dedication of St. Gabriel Archangel Slovak Church. On Thanksgiving Day, 1969, an announcement was made that the Church and Rectory was to be demolished. New quarters of worship had to be planned, and the school auditorium was made into a temporary church, which till today serves as the place of worship for the parish. There is joy and gratitude in the hearts of all today, for the dream has come true, a new edifice, is being dedicated for the honor and glory of God. Daily, the parishioners have beseeched Almighty God to grant them the desire of retaining their own Church and parish, in the following prayer. " 0 God, we give you thanks for hearing our prayers, and for granting to us the favors we have asked and prayed for, especially, the permission to build a new St. Gabriel Archangel Slovak Church, to your honor and glory. St. Gabriel Archangel, patron of this our Slovak parish, we give you thanks for your intercession for us before the throne of God. May you always be in our prayers, and constantly with us, directing our actions to the honor and glory of God." We pray that Almighty God will continue to bless this parish and all our efforts in the future, and inspire all to work zealously for God, Country and our good Slovak people. We are grateful to the priests who have served this parish, to the Sisters, who also for so many years have labored " to develop a Catholic sense and apostolic activity in young persons." II Vatican Council This book is an act of gratitude to Almighty God on the part of its members for the seventy years of its existence - for the many blessings received. Rev. George A. Jurica, Pastor
