I a I'Li r A THE FIRST 25 YEARS 1902-1927 St. Josaphat's Parish was started in 1901, when a committee representing a number of the Polish families belonging to St. Adalbert's Parish and living in the Mission St. section, petitioned Bishop Phelan for the establishment of a separate parish and the appointment of a pastor. One of the members of this committee was John B. Schultz, the father of Rev. Theodore J. Schultz, who was later to become pastor of St. Hyacinth's Church, Oakland. In a letter to Mr. Schultz, dated Dec. 8, 1901, Msgr. William Kittell, who was Chancellor of the Diocese, stated that the name of the new parish could be St. Josaphat's or St. Mark's; Mr. Schultz had his son, than a student at Holy Ghost College (Duquesne University), make a study of the life of St. Josaphat; and as a result he was chosen as the parish's patron. The first pastor was Rev. Francis Baczewski, then an assistant at St. Adalbert's. The first services were held in St. Peter's Parish Hall, 28th St. on April 20, 1902, while a frame church building was being erected on the site of the present church, in the 2300 block of Mission St. Father Baczewski remained in charge for three years, following him were a number of priests who served as pastors for interim periods. Rev. Alexander Siwiec was REV. FRANCIS BACZEWSKI FIRST PASTOR AND FOUNDER MARCH, 1902 TO MARCH, 1905 6 placed in charge, remaining until his death in 1932. At the beginning of Father Siwiec's pastorate work was begun on the present church. The basement was completed in 1907 and used for church services until 1916, when the edifice was completed. Father Siwiec also built the rectory and convent, and opened the parish school in the church basement. In the year 1909, when religious services began in the new church, the wooden structure that was first used as the temporary St. Josaphat's Church, was converted into a social and athletic center. This was actually the first lyceum under the auspices of the parish. Year after year, this lyceum was the scene of the best amateur boxing shows in the City of Pittsburgh. The basketball teams never lost one game on their home court. The great Polish Falcons also used the facilities of the lyceum for their training and exercise programs for a number of years. The first son of the parish to be ordained was Rev. Stanislaus Labujewski. He became pastor of St. Stanislaus' Church, Ambridge. He celebrated his First Solemn Mass in our basement church, July 2, 1911. Father Theodore Schultz was ordained in 1913 and offered his First Mass in St. Josaphat's on Sept. 30 of that same year. REV. ALEXANDER SIWIEC PASTOR, MARCH, 1907 TO MARCH, 1932 The first parish structure of St. Josaphat Parish was located at the corner of Mission and Sterling Streets. The blessing and dedication was held on July 19, 1902 by the Most Rev. Regis Canevin. Building site presently serves as the parish hall. View of the first chapel in the old wooden structure, 1903. First graduation class, 1909. The first choir of St. Josaphat's Parish, 1911. They were called "Choir of Saint Gregory". The parish cemetery was located in Baldwin Township near Glass Run Road. It was blessed on November 9,1924. THE SECOND 25 YEARS, 1928 to 1952 The second 25 years started in 1928. Father Alexander Siwiec was Pastor until the Lord called him to his eternal reward on March 11, 1932. He had been the pastor at St. Josaphat's for 25 faithful years. The parish prospered and grew under his able guidance. On July 14, 1932 Rev. Adalbert Garstka became pastor of St. Josaphat Church. His main objective was to renovate the paintings inside the church and to add an annex to the school due to increased enrollment. REV. ADALBERT GARSTKA PASTOR, JULY, 1932 TO FEBRUARY, 1955 10 During the first fifty years of its existence, the school had undergone numerous changes, always improving with age. Its humble beginnings can be traced back to a few old wooden buildings and a few classrooms in the church basement. In 1916, when the new church was erected during the pastorship of Father Siwiec, the entire basement was partitioned off into nine classrooms. To take care of the children of the evergrowing parish, the church had to resort back to the old wooden buildings in order to accommodate hundreds of children. Always anxious to provide for the childrens' welfare, Father Garstka soon saw the need for additional classrooms. Due to his untiring efforts, the loyalty of the parishioners and the splendid cooperation of his committee, an annex of six classrooms, a lyceum, and a remodeled parish hall was built. It was dedicated on May 12, 1940 by Monsignor Andrew.S. Garstka, brother of Father Garstka. Eight years later, in 1948, the entire school was renovated. In 1952 the $120,000 school had 10 classrooms where 450 children from kindergarden through the eighth grade received their education from 10 Felician Sisters under Sister Mary Theodosia, who was then the principal. Under the wise management of Father Garstka, improvements and good maintenance kept the school in excellent condition. They found that a good educational institution would provide religious instruction that imparted to the children a good foundation to help fit them for future citizenship in heaven and everyday society. Graduates of St. Josaphat's School have chosen all stations of life. Many prominent religious, professional and tradesmen have built successful futures on the foundation given them in our school. A majority of the graduates settled in the parish after getting married. They believed this would enable their children to benefit from the same services of the school that trained their hearts and minds for God and Country. To give recognition to those fine young men and women of the parish who served their country during World War I and II the Veterans Memorial Association was started in November 1948. The group combined their efforts toward the realization of a War Memorial that St. Josaphat's Parish could well be proud of and one that would add beauty to the vicinity of the church and to the community. On October 16, 1949 the groundbreaking ceremonies took place. Excavation was started on March 13, 1950 and soon actual construction was under way. On May 14, 1950 the War Memorial became a reality when the final Dedication ceremonies were held. It was the realization of a goal that would stand permanently as a tribute to all of those who had served and as a special dedication to the eighteen men of the Parish who made the supreme sacrifice. Cornerstone for the new school building was blessed July 16, 1939, it was completed in 1940 and dedicated March 12, 1940. First principal was Sister Mary Theodosia assisted by 10 other Felician Sisters. ST,N \I:' I T'RS R', I i g! KUKLESKI PASTOR, FEBRUARY, 1955 TO AUGUST, 1975 '" i ,, With the death of Father Garstka in Feb. 1955, Rev. Vincent B. Kukleski became the new pastor of St. Josaphat's Parish. Father Kukleski, a local South Sider was ordained in June, 1928 at St. Vincents, Latrobe, Pa. After serving as an assistant in many parishes he was finally appointed pastor of St. Anthony's in Homestead, Pa. then on to St. Josaphat's. Father Kukleski devoted himself to the duties of pastor and the welfare of his congregation. He earned the respect and affection of the parishioners, and particularly the children in whom he had a special interest. He spent many hours in the classrooms and his rapport with the students gained their respect and confidence. It was much to his sorrow when the schools merged and St. Josaphat School was phased out. With the closing of the school, the Felician Sisters left our parish. Father Kukleski followed the sports teams ardently and was their most vociferous fan. He was rewarded for his loyalty, the Boys CYO teams won ten District Titles and three State Titles. The girls teams not to be outdone won three District Titles and one State Title. The softball teams were equally successful, the boys won two championships, and the girls one. The church was completely repainted during his pastorate, and the old rickety pews replaced with new and more comfortable ones. During his administration most of the parish organ izations were already in existence, but he did start the Christian Mothers and Guild with the able assistance of Father Aranowski who was the first moderator. With the transfer of Father Aranowski, Father Kukleski took these duties upon himself which he held until his retirement. Under his guidance the first Mens Club was started in 1970. The Annual Indoor Festival, New Years Eve Party, and the Family Picnics became part of parish activities always awaited with anticipation by all. These social events brought the parish closer together during the leisure hours. There were four priests ordained into the priesthood during Father Kukleski's pastorate at St. Josaphat, with another hopeful that entered the Seminary in 1975. Not being in the best of health and feeling the strains of over forty years of priesthood Father Kukleski resigned his pastorate in July, 1975. Rev. Joseph Swierczynski became the new pastor of St. Josaphat's Parish on Aug. 27, 1975. A native of nearby Sharpsburg, Father "Joe" undertook his assign ment with much vim and vigor. Plans for the 75th anniversary were carried to completion by Father "Joe". The church and rectory were completely repainted and redecorated for this important event. Father "Joe" has also exerted great influence in preserving the traditions of St. Josaphat. He replaced the old antiquated organ with a splendid modern one and re-organized the choir and hired a new organist-choirmaster. His coming to St. Josaphat's marked the beginning of a new era and the great anticipation of success during the next 25 years. Last kindergarten class, 1956. 15 To Fr. Swierczynski and the people of St. Josaphat's Parish. On the occasion of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of St. Josaphat Parish, I wish to congratulate you and the loyal parishioners. I am proud to have been associated with St. Josaphat Church as pastor for twenty years, and I join with all of you in thanking God for the many blessings and graces that have come to this parish from the bountiful hands of Our Heavenly Father, these past 75 years. It is my prayer that Almighty God may continue to bless the pastor and parishioners of St. Josaphat Parish in order to enable them to continue to work for their own sanctification, the Glory of God and the welfare of our beloved country. At this time we pause to render thanks for the strong and loyal determination of our founding fathers, which never faltered though faced many privations, trials and tribulations in establishing this parish. There is really no adequate way of measuring the many and diverse contributions; no way humanly possible, to draw dimensions of these labors of unselfish love of hundreds of loyal and dedicated parishioners, both past and present, who have made this Seventy-Fifth Jubilee celebration become a reality. Looking into the future, let us keep uppermost in mind, a most vital factor-Faith. Faith in God which makes us aware, always, of the need of His presence in our daily lives. Faith in the ideals set down by our founding fathers to keep alive our beautiful and ethnic customs which reveal our rich heritage. Finally, faith in ourselves to be able to stand up for what we hold sacred and dear to us. These, my best wishes, I extend to you, dear family of St. Josaphat on this the "day which the Lord has made." Devotedl yours in Christ, Rev. Joseph E. JOSAPHAT BISHOP AND MARTYR November 12 JOSAPHAT Kuncewicz was born in Poland of noble parents in 1580 and went on to become the first great leader of the Ruthenian Catholics or Uniates, the former schismatics who had returned to the Church through the treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1595. Entering the Order of St. Basil at twenty years of age he thoroughly reformed it, giving it more active character. So wel Il-known did his wisdom and knowledge become that he was recommended to the Pope by his own people to rule over them as Archbishop of Polotsk in 1617. In this office, he campaigned intensively for the conversion of schismatics and for the reform of his own clergy, who were commonly ignorant and venal. Through his boundless charity and powerful preaching, he established the ascendency of the Uniate Church, but was soon marked for destruction by the schismatics. He was slain by Orthodox fanatics in 1623 at Vitebsk. ST. JOSAPHAT CHURCH WHAT THE HOUSE OF GOD IS LIKE I did not know what God is like Until a friendly word Came to me in an hour of need And it was God I heard. I did not know what God is like Until I heard loves' feet On errands of Gods' Mercy Go up and down Life's street. I did not know what God is like Until I felt a hand Clasp mine and lift me when alone I had no strength to stand. I think I know what God is like, For I have seen the face Of God's son looking at me From all the human race. Tr A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP LEONARD The Diamond Jubilee of a parish, as with any event of equal length, is worthy of special commemoration. The 75th anniversary of Saint Josaphat Parish is an occasion to pause and give recognition to those who established the parish, with the purpose in mind of preserving the Catholic faith among the faithful of Polish birth and Polish descent. The people who established this parish, in all probability, came to this country in order to find a better way of life. They had little of the material things of this life, but they did. possess a strong and firm gift of faith that cannot be estimated in material terms. In order to preserve this gift of faith for themselves and their children, they were willing to make financial sacrifices to provide facilities so that they could fulfill their religious duties in a language and culture similar to their homeland. The parishioners of Saint Josaphat Parish can be well proud of what has been achieved these past seventy-five years. Although in late years there have been changes in the community, such changes should not create fear that the parish cannot continue its contribution to the spiritual and material welfare not only of the parish but the neighborhood of which it is a part. All must move forward, confident that by being true to the teachings of the faith of the pioneers who established the parish, all endeavors towards the accomplishment of the good of church and community will be as equally successful in these times as in the past. In this passage of time there were undoubtedly certain priests, sisters and laity who contributed greatly to the progress of the parish, but it seems to me that this is an occasion to pay tribute to each and every one who in any way contributed to the good of the parish. Let us be grateful for the past, concerned for the present, and hopeful for the future. To Father Swierczynski and the devoted faithful of Saint Josaphat Parish, I extend congratulations on this festive, historic and joyous occasion. November, 1977 Bishop of Pitts urg DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH OFFICE OF THE VICAR FOR EDUCATION 111 BOULEVARD OF ALLIES N d PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA 15222 S - (412) 456-3100 February 7, 1977 Reverend Joseph E. Swierczynski Pastor, St. Josaphat Church 2314 Mission Street Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15203 Dear Father Swierczynski: Congratulations to St. Josaphat Parish on the occasion of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary. The past achievements of this Catholic community is part of the proud record of the diocese and deserves our applause. We thank God for all that has been done at St. Josaphat for the Church universal and for Polish Catholics in particular. At the same time, we thank the Catholics of Polish descent for all they have done for the diocese. Their special and long standing loyalty to the Church has always been a source of strength and inspiration to both the Church and community. We pray that the years ahead will be equally rich and rewarding for the parish. May God shower His generous blessings on all the people and on all the priests and religious who have served them. Finally, may the St. Josaphat Community continue to enrich both the general and Catholic community by a faithful adherence to its cultural and spiritual heritage. With every good wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Au iary Bishop Vicar General/Vicar for Education JBMcD:mk DIOCESE OF PITTSBURGH OFFICE OF THE VICAR GENERAL - CHANCELLOR 111 BOULEVARD OF ALLIES PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA 15222 (412) 456-3131 June 25, 1977 Dear Clergy, Religious and Laity: I send my heartfelt congratulations, as you approach the joyful observance of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of Saint Josaphat Parish. Polish Catholics are among the most loyal and devoted members of the Church. Along with their language, traditions and customs, they brought with them to the United States and to this part of Western Pennsylvania, a need to keep that Faith alive by establishing parishes where the teachings of Christ would be passed down to other generations in a "Polish way," with the prayers and hymns and devotions to those Saints so beloved in Poland. This would teach newer generations to love that homeland whence their ancestors came. In this day, when many people are seeking the roots of their ethnic identity, parishes like Saint Josaphat, do the job of keeping up continuity with the past, and building up new structures for the future. This happy occasion then is a time for all of you to remember why Saint Josaphat exists, and to renew the Faith of today's generation. By doing so, you will demonstrate your gratitude for what has been done. You will protect the past, nourish the present and hand on to the future your sacred and proud heritage of Polish Catholicism. I send my blessings to the beloved of Saint Josaphat's, along with a promise of prayers for your deceased founders and pioneers. With every best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, + Most Reverend Anthony G. Bosco Vicar General - Chancellor Auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh
