,$aint fajetan 9turcl4 618 KNOX AVENUE MONESSEN, PA. 15062 May 2, 1971 My Dear Parishioners: Today we give thanks to God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon this parish during the past 50 years. We earnestly pray that the Good Lord continue these blessings in the future that lies before us. We are eternally grateful to Monsignor Nunzio Pirulli and all the good parishioners for their inspiration, guidance, support and sacrifice in building twenty-five years ago the present St. Cajetan Church. May we never take them for granted, but be mindful always, in our prayers and in our actions, of the great debt of gratitude we owe them. God, and only God, can properly reward them. One half century is over now. It is history. We of the church today must pay tribute to our predecessors, all the priests, and the parishioners who have laid the foundation for this great parish. It is up to the young adults and the youth of the parish to carry on the tradition of the past in conjunction with the changes which of necessity must take place in the future if the parish is to prosper and fulfill its committment to God, to itself, and to its fellow man. Let us hopefully pray that they will perform and fulfill their task as sucessfully as did their predecessors. May God grant eternal rest to all those who have been called by God in the past 50 years, and may He grant all his blessings to the good faithful parishioners of today. ChSin risrel C Rev. P. Lino Ramellini Pastor of St. Cajetan Church 5221 S. W. Seventh Street Fort Lauderdale, Florida April 1, 1971 To the unforgettable people of St. Cajetan's, On the occasion of the celebration of the Golden and Silver Anniversary of St. Cajetan Church, I extend my love, devotion, and best wishes for the future. My blessings and the blessings of Almighty God be with you, Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Msgr. Nunzio A. Pirulli ST. HEDWIG CHURCH Box 484 Smock, Pennsylvania 15480 March 3, 1971 Rev. P. Lino Ramellini, Pastor Saint Cajetan Church 618 Knox Avenue Monessen, Pennsylvania 15062 Dear Father Ramellini: I have heard that you and your good people are planning to celebrate soon the Golden Anniversary of the Congregation and the Silver Anniversary of the present church. I am certain that the celebration will turn out to be a fitting tribute to the many who, in spirit of loving sacrifice, have contributed much of their talents, labors and money, in order to accomplish so? much in a so short span of time. There is no doubt in my mind that the people of Saint Cajetan, under your guidance, will mark the occasion in such a way as to be worthy of their best traditions. The have every reason to rejoice with you and to give thanks to the Lord for what He, with their cooperation, has accomplished in their midst. By this time, I am sure, you have had many opportunities to experience the dedication and the generosity of the flock entrusted to your care, fruit of many years of pastoral care of Monsignor Pirulli, a priest endowed with many marvelous gifts as a leader and pastor of souls. You may expect such dedication and generosity to continue in the future and to be a source of comfort to you and of inspiration to the new generations. To you, dear Father Lino, and to your people I offer my sincere congratulations. And may the good Lord guide you all to better achievements for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Lino Ramellinni Pastor St. Cajetan Church 618 Knox Avenue Monessen, Penna. 15062 My dear Father Ramellinni: How time does fly! It seems only yesterday that St. Cajetan's moved into its present church site; not 25 long years ago. But, that is what we are commemorating. Twenty-five years at your present site, and 50 years of St. Cajetan's in Monessen. Before I go on, let me congratulate you and your mag nificant parishioners, and all who have gone before you. Your achievements deserve the highest praise. As you know, my home town is Jeannette and my own church is the Ascension in Jeannette. But St. Cajetan's has always had a special place in my thoughts. I know so many of your good parishionrs, and consider you and your beloved predecessor -- Father Pirilli -- among my closest friends. So much has been done by the people of St. Cajetan's; the school, the rectory, the church itself, and so much more. And you did it by working constantly and patiently, with your goals so clearly defined. Yet, the greatest success of St. Cajetan's has been the spiritual guidance and comfort it has given so many. And I include myself in that grateful group. So I wish you an eternity in Monessen, and all the good things you so richly deserve. I am proud to be associated with St. Cajetan's, and honored to participate in this grand celebration. With kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely yours, JOHN H. DENT, M.C. Persico Vincent Gigliotti A SHORT HISTORY OF SAINT CAJETAN'S The history of St. Cajetan's Parish begins around the turn of the century. It was at that time that the first Italian immigrants began arriving to work in the mills of the Pittsburgh Steel Company, of the American Sheet and Tin Plate Company and of the Page Wire and Fence Company. They came from every region of Italy, the majority from Abruzzi, Calabria, Marche, Sicily, Apulia, Campania and a few from each of the Northern Italian Provinces. Since they were mostly farmers and unskilled laborers, they were not accustomed to the heavy, dangerous and dirty work of the steel mills. But they worked very hard and saved their meager earnings, hoping someday to return to their native farms. Some of them did, but the majority remained here in Monessen. Religiously, these new immigrants left much to be desired. There were many reasons for this: no Italian Church, lack of leadership, and the downplaying of religion on the part of some of the immigrants. However, several attempts were made to start a local Italian Mission, but these were unsuccessful. In the meantime the Italian Community attended different local churches, but gradually the people felt the need of having a church of their own. The spiritual revival was created in 1920, when Reverend Gaetano Diana, Pastor of Mother of Sorrows, Charleroi, Pa., purchased a little frame church on Schoonmaker Avenue and Eighth Street in Monessen from the Greek Catholic congregation, for the purpose of organizing a Mission Church for the Italian Catholics of Monessen. Father Diana became pastor of the Mission Church. This was the beginning of Saint Cajetan's. Two years later, after the church had been remodeled and decorated, fire broke out, completely destroying the sanctuary. The damage was estimated at $5,000.00. In July of 1924, Father Diana was transfered to Detroit, Michigan. His successor, Reverend Gregory Paonessa, continued the good work until December of 1940. The "Little Mission" progressed spiritually, slowly but surely. In fact, from 1931 to 1933, Father Paonessa was getting the enormous sum of $6.50 a month in his collection basket. This amount was hardly enough to cover the traveling expenses from his Charleroi residence to the Mission in Monessen. Due to economical conditions, created by strikes, bank failures, depression and financial panics, the congregation struggled along for two decades without making much of a headway. The financial status of the parish was almost nil. In December of 1940, the Right Reverend H. C. Boyle, Bishop of Pittsburgh, confronted with the problem of meeting the spiritual needs of the Ital ian Catholics of Monessen, who were clinging to J their little Mission Church, deemed it time to send them a resident pastor to organize and build a congregation and church and change the status of Saint Cajetan's from that of a Mission Church to that of a parish. On December 13, 1940, the Reverend Nunzio Pirulli, pastor of Saint Perpetua Church of McKeesport, was transferred to Monessen, to become the first resident pastor of Saint Cajetan. The first Mass, with Father. Pirulli as resident Pastor, was celebrated in the "old church" on December 13, 1940. With the arrival of Father Pirulli, the picture began to change, seemingly, overnight, and things began the happen. The little frame church was too inadequate to meet the needs of the growing congregation; a parish house was needed to house the resident priest, a site for the long-looked-forward-to church had to be purchased. A Building Fund Campaign was initiated immediately and on August 15, 1941, the congregation, com prised of 700 active Italian families, through their long and untireing efforts was able to purchase an eight room brick house to serve as the Rectory and two other frame houses, which would be the future site of a new church. The property was located on Knox Avenue and was purchased for the sum of $15,000.00, he amount including repairs and furnishings for the parish house. On July 5, 1942, less than one year later, the people of Saint Cajetan Church became the real owners of their purchase-the last dollar had been paid and the burning of the mortgage on their property was celebrated. On that same day, July 5, 1942, the same congregation who had struggled together through depression and recession made a pledge "to continue the diligent work and to never stop until the goal is reached-A New Church -Simple but Substantial!" The idea of erecting a new church for the Italians of Monessen was launched during the end of World War II. Because of the war, it was impossible to obtain the construction materials. The drawing and filing of the necessary forms was turned down as non-essential and unnecessary. The permit was obtained, however, with the help and influence of our Mayor Hugo J. Parente. The main obstacle, naturally, was money. Times were difficult and monetary resources were practically non-existant among the eight hundred poor Italian families, whose limited incomes were still rather uncertain. Labor strikes and the shortages of lumber, bricks, cement and other building materials, made the goal seem like an impossible dream. The many obstacles and difficulties were known far in advance, but Fr. Pirulli had a dream, and he would make it come true. He took as his motto that old Latin expression: "Labor omnia vincit.", "Hard work conquers everything." So it was that on June 17, 1945, the 25th Anniversary of the church, ground breaking ceremonies were held for the new church. The laying and blessing of the cornerstone took place on October 20, 1946, with Bishop John King Mussio, of Steubenville officiating. The first Mass was celebrated in the church basement at midnight, December 25, 1946. In 1949, Father Pirulli's dream came true and the new Sairt Cajetan Church was complete. On Sunday, November 20, 1949, it was formally dedicated, with Bishop John Deardon, Bishop of Pittsburgh, blessing the church and celebrating the first Mass in the new building. This was possible through the splendid cooperation received from all parishioners. They were able to say, "The New Saint Cajetan Church, a Shrine to live Forever." The church, built at the cost of a quarter million dollars, was constructed during the hardest times by a nucleus of Italian working men, who could spare only a few nickles from their meager wages. The architectural design, a Romanesque style of the twelfth century, was created by Ernest Clark, architect, and built by Justine Brown, Contractor. It offers an attractive place of worship with a seating capacity of 750 people. It is 130 feet long and 61 feet wide. The exterior walls are of golden face bricks, with steel and concrete floors, steps, and platforms of colored terrazzo. The heating system is of a most modern type of radiant heat, controlled by a gas fired boiler. In eight years, Father Pirulli, laboring under difficult struggles, had built a church which was the pride of the Italian Community. The Peoples Bank of Monessen gave a loan of $40,000.00 to the congregation in October 1949 to complete the church. The interest and sundry legal expenses in connection with the mortgage amounted to $2700.00. The initial cost of the church was $301,000.00. The purchase of the Sisters House in 1950, with the remodeling of it added $16,000.00 making a total of $317,255.00 for the entire property. The church had been redecorated in 1952 at a cost of $5,000.00. With the help of his nephew, Reverend Francis Pirulli, and the three Italian Sisters of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy, who came to Monessen on March 25, 1949, Father Pirulli had constructed a church and parish that were a marvelous accomplishment, worthy of admiration and credit to the City of Monessen, when one considered that they had been paid by humble immigrants or sons of immigrants, 98 per cent of which were American Citizens, owned their own homes and had deposits in the Post Office and in banks. Each one was a possessor of scores of United States Bonds. In World War 11, 625 of our Italian men and women fought for Uncle Sam and 18 of them made the supreme sacrifice. On October 6, 1953, the church mortgage was paid off and on November 1, 1953, the parish of Saint Cajetan, with its pastor, celebrated with pride and joy, the date of freedom from debts and the burning of the mortgage On that occasion, they thanked humbly, Almighty God for the strength and enthisuasm given to them to reach their goal. At that time, the church was composed of 950 families or about 4000 members. Father Pirulli was honored at a testimonial dinner on May 5, 1957 at which time he was presented the Italian Government Cross. In 1957, the services of three Sisters of the Order of St. Joseph were obtained and they aided Father Pirulli in organizing a splendid cathechetical program for the many children of the parish. Preparations were then in order for the parish and Father Pirulli to begin on their fondest dream, a school for the children of Saint Cajetan. Property was purchased near the church on Knox Avenue for this worthy cause. In February 1958, ground was broken and work began immediately on the building of the ultra-modern school which was completed in September 1958. The school was solemnly blessed and dedicated by the late Bishop Hugh Lamb, Bishop of Greensburg, on September 14, 1958. The Sisters of St. Joseph were selected to staff the school and a house near the church was purchased to serve as a convent for them. Serving as principals for the Saint Cajetan School were Sister Louis Mary and Sister Cormac. In May 1962, His Holiness Pope John XXIII honored Father Pirulli, who was serving as a diocesan consultant, with the promotion to Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor. This was a fitting tribute to a priest of God who had labored so diligently for his people. On May 26, 1962, one of our own young men, Reverend Michael Bucci was ordained to the priesthood. Father Bucci was the first member of our parish to be ordained a priest, and Bishop William G. Connare, Bishop of Greensburg, afforded us the singular privilege of allowing this ceremony to take place in our parish church. Property adjoining the church was purchased April 21, 1963, for use as a playground and church parking lot. The burning of the mortgage on the school property was celebrated on October 4, 1964. On November 21, 1965, the 25th Anniversary of Saint Cajetan as a parish (and not a mission) was celebrated with a Solemn High Mass of Thanksgiving. Monsignor Pirulli was celebrant of the Mass, assisted by all former assistants of the parish. In 1965 there were 950 families or about 4000 members enrolled in the parish. Three hundred forty children were enrolled in our school. While pastor at Saint Cajetan, Monsignor Pirulli saw his parish grow from the little mission into the largest parish in the city of Monessen. It had come a long way from the little "old" church on top of the hill, to the grand tribute it is today which stands as a testimony to the labors of the people of God. Monsignor Pirulli credits the parishioners in Monessen with all the success of his undertakings. He considers himself blessed with the encouragement and co-operation that was given him. Effective January 31, 1968, Monsignor Pirulli retired as Pastor of Saint Cajetan and was named pastor emeritus upon his retirement. Effective January 31, 1968, Reverend John R. Casaliggi became pastor of Saint Cajetan. Father Casaliggi was transferred from Saint Hedwig Church in Smock, Pa. While at Saint Cajetan, Father Casaliggi had the church repainted and redecorated. In June 1970, Father Casaliggi was transferred to Saint Hedwig Church in Smock, Pa. and Reverend P. Lino Ramellini, became pastor of Saint Cajetan. Father Ramellini was transferred from Saint Patrick Church, Brady's Bend, Pa., where he had been the pastor since 1967. An air conditioning system was installed in the church in 1970-1971 and tentative plans are being made to build a new rectory in 1972 or 1973. Presently, many organizations, including the Rosary Altar Society, Christian Mothers Society, Holy Name Mens' Society, Mens' Choir, Folk Singers, Church Committee, Ushers, Altar Boys, Commentators, and CCD Teachers are working to keep Saint Cajetan Parish a credit to the city of Monessen, to the Catholic Church and to God. As of December 1970, there were 889 families or 3055 people enrolled in the parish and 227 children enrolled in the catholic grade school and 9 students enrolled in the catholic high school. We would like to thank those who have gone before us, priests and people; those who have worked on the various committees preparing for this day and this Jubilee Booklet: those whose names appear in this booklet as patrons. We would especially like to thank our advertisers whose kindness and generosity have made this Golden and Silver Jubilee Booklet possible. They have thought of us. Please think of them if you are in need of their products or services. JNiTED STATES OF AmERiCA ~4mk 9s~262J 9 February 1971 Reverend and dear Father: On the joyous occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Saint Cajetan Parish and the Silver Jubilee of the present edifice, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that our Holy Father, Pope Paul VI, graciously bestows his Apostolic Benediction upon you, upon the former Pastor, Monsignor Nunzio A. Pirul li, the parishioners and all who join in observing this happy event. Much has been accomplished for the honor and glory of Almighty God during the past fifty years; for this reason, there is joy and deep gratitude in the hearts of all who have been associ ated with Saint Cajetan Parish. In the years to come, may Our Lord ever continue to draw the priests and people of the parish closer to Himself, the Way, the Truth and the Life. To this Blessing of the Holy Father, I wish to add my personal congratulations and good wishes. With sentiments of esteem and renewed felicitations, I remain Sincerely yours in hrist, Apos ic Delegate Reverend P. Lino Ramellini Pastor Saint Cajetan Church Mone s sen, Pennsylvania DIOCESE OF GREENSBURG 723 E. PITTSBURGH ST. * GREENSBURG, PENNA. 15601 February 4, 1971 Reverend P. Lino Ramellini Saint Cajetan Church 618 Knox Avenue Monessen, Pennsylvania 15062 Dear Father Ramellini: May I greet you, your associate and your devoted people on the joyous double anniversary you are celebrating this year. As you look around, the sacrifices of the Italian people of Monessen are evident everywhere in your Parish. I salute each and every one of them, recognizing their justifiable pride on this happy occasion. Fifty years your Parish has served as "the Gate of Heaven" for many hard-working people. It has kept before these people the ideals of Christian family life. It has witnessed their response to this direction in the many fine and genuine families who now comprise its membership. Twenty-five years ago the sterling leadership of Monsignor Pirulli was rewarded by the building of the present Parish Church. As everyone knows, he gave himself completely to the people he loved dearly as his very own in Monessen. You and Father Casaliggi, helped by Father Pugliese, have been able to restore this Church for this jubilee, for which your good people are deeply grateful. Even more important was the school program developed under the direction of Monsignor Pirulli. I know the many sacrifices made by the people to establish this program and to build adequate school facilities for the children. I know their initial disappointment, when this program was merged into the consolidated program for the community. I am deeply grateful for the grand way in which your good people have come to recognize the values of consolidation in these days of pressure and difficulty for all school programs. I am sure the Lord will continue to bless the effort of the Sisters, the lay teachers and you good priests who help to perfect this program, a service to the total community, and an example of genuine cooperation to all within the Diocese. Asking the Lord's choicest blessings upon the past and present generations of the people of Saint Cajetan Parish, begging eternal rest for the faithful departed, and asking every grace for all who are still striving toward that goal, dear Father Ramellini, I am Devotedly yours in Christ, Bishop of Greensburg
