And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there; Oh, say, does that Star-spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? LORD (The audience is requested to remain seated during the Recessional.) Dick Thornburgh Dick Thornburgh has served as governor of Pennsylvania, attorney general of the United States, and under—secretary—general of the United Nations during a public career that spanned more than 25 years. He is counsel to the Pittsburgh—based law firm of Kirkpatrick 8c Lockhart LLP, resident in its Washington, D.C. office. Elected governor of Pennsylvania in 1978 and re-elected in 1982, Thornburgh was the first Republican ever to serve two successive terms in that office. In a 1986 Newsweek poll, he was named by his fellow governors as one of the nation’s most effective big—state governors. After his unanimous confirmation by the United States Senate, Thornburgh served three years as attorney general of the United States (1988-1991) under Presidents Reagan and Bush. As attorney general, he played a leading role in the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act and carried out an unprecedented crack-down on white-collar crime. As the highest-ranking American at the United Nations, Thornburgh authored a widely praised report on management practices within the U.N. A native of Pittsburgh, Thornburgh was educated at Yale University, where he earned an engineering degree, and at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he served as an editor of the Law Review.
