Description
Lemuel Stephens was hired as the first professor of engineering at the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1843 and is considered the father of engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Stephens courses were part of a movement to develop degrees of scientific training instead of the standard classical studies of the day. Stephens left Pittsburgh in 1849 after the Western University suffered its second fire in four years.
