Description
Jonas Salk administering the polio virus vaccine during field test trials in Pittsburgh elementary schools. Starting in February 1954, the vaccine was administered to 15,000 volunteers (primarily children). The success of these trials led to the national trial in 1955 which inoculated another 1.8 million children. To the right of Jonas Salk is Mary Bailey, MD. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine in 1944, she joined Salk's research team in 1947. Mary Bailey assisted in and administered the polio virus vaccine during the field test trials in Pittsburgh, as well as the campus-wide vaccination at the Cathedral of Learning in 1957.
