Cho-yun Hsu (許倬雲 or 许倬云; pinyin: Xǔ Zhuōyún), was born July 10, 1930 in the city of Xiamen, of Wuxi ancestry in China. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in Humanities in 1962. He arrived in Pittsburgh in 1970, and one year later he achieved the status of full professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the East Asian Studies Department in 1971. From 1980 he served as a University Professor for 20 years, and retired in 1999 as the University Professor Emeritus. In 1980 he was elected Academician, Academia Sinica, Taiwan . In 2004, he received the Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award, the highest honor from the Association for Asian Studies (AAS). Prof. Xu's research area is ancient China, but he also taught such courses as History of East Asia, East Asian Research, History of Chinese Thought, Ancient China, and Ancient Worlds.
许倬云(1930年7月10日-),出生于福建省厦门市,祖籍江苏省无锡市。著名历史学家,教授,1962年于芝加哥大学获得博士学位。1970年来到匹兹堡,一年后取得正教授职位。1982年升任大学讲座教授,至1999年退休,成为荣休大学讲座讲授。1980年,许教授当选为台湾中央研究院院士。2004年,荣获亚洲研究学会终身成就奖。许教授的研究领域是古代中国,他还致力于东亚历史、中国思想史、古代中国以及古代世界史的教学及研究。
Cho-yun Hsu is one of the founding members of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation (CCK) for International Scholarly Exchange, and has served as chair of its North American Committee since 1989. During the 1990s, he was instrumental in providing funding to a number of universities and colleges to establish teaching positions on Chinese studies. Hsu recommended CCK Foundation grants to libraries to catalog rare Chinese books and to digitize historic maps of East Asia.
许倬云是蒋经国基金会的创始成员之一,并于1989年起担任北美委员会主席。在20世纪90年代,他为建立中国研究教学岗位方面为众多高等院校提供了有力的资金支持。并推进了蒋经国基金会资助图书馆对中国稀见图书的编目以及东亚历史地图的数字化工作。
His major contributions to the study of ancient China include Western Chou Civilization (1990 Yale University Press), Ancient China in Transition (1965 Stanford University Press), and Han Agriculture (1980 University of Washington Press). His recent work Wangu Jianghe (2009 Echo; translated into English as China: A New Cultural History (2012 Columbia University Press) narrates the full course of development of Chinese culture in the perspective of globalization. Hsu is also known for his advocacy and advisory work during the democratic transition in Taiwan.
许倬云学贯中西,主要代表作有《西周史》(耶鲁大学出版社,1990年),《中国古代社会史论:春秋战国时期的社会流动》(中文版,广西师范大学出版社,2006年;英文版,斯坦福大学出版社1965年),《汉代农业》(华盛顿大学出版社,1980年)。他的《万古江河:中国历史文化的转折与开展》(上海文艺出版社,2006年;英译本于2012年哥伦比亚大学出版社出版)以全球化的视角讲述了中国文化发展的全过程。另外,在台湾社会的民主政治转型进程中他也发挥了重要的推动作用。

This correspondence between Hsu and colleagues, students and friends are included in this series. It contains letters dated as early as 1972. They can be divided into these types: a friend requesting academic instruction and advises, academic recommendation and supporting letters, review and correction of research papers, invitation letters, greeting cards and correspondences with publishers, etc.
