Abstract
Dr. Eugene Nicholas Myers was the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1972 to 2005. A pioneer in the field of Otolaryngology, Dr. Myers has made contributions to the management of cancer of the head and neck including the development and implementation of the treatment method to manage patients who have extracapsular spread of cancer in their cervical lymph nodes and the technique of skull base surgery. The Papers include correspondence, publications, and lectures pertaining to Dr. Myers' medical career, professional associations, and personal life.

Biographical / Historical

Eugene Nicholas Myers, MD is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology and Emeritus Chair, Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh (FRCS Edin (Hon)). Dr. Myers was the first full-time chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology; he held this position from 1972 to 2005. A pioneer in the field of Otolaryngology, Dr. Myers has made many contributions to the management of cancer of the head and neck, notably the development and implementation of the treatment method to manage patients who have extracapsular spread of cancer in their cervical lymph nodes and the technique of skull base surgery.

In 1954, Dr. Myers graduated with a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1954 and an M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine in 1960. He then completed an internship at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City (1960-1961) followed by a residency in Otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School (1961-1965). During his residency he was mentored by Dr. William W. Montgomery, a professor at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School. This was followed by military service as a Captain in the U.S. Army practicing Otolaryngology in the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany from 1965 to 1967. He then served as a Special Fellow in Head and Neck Surgery from 1967 to 1968, with Dr. John Conley in New York City.

Throughout his career, Dr. Myers has served as the president of the American Board of Otolaryngology, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), the American Society of Head and Neck Surgery, the American Laryngological Association, and the Pan American Association of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He was the founder of the International Department of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and organized a worldwide network of National Societies. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Eye and Ear Foundation and the Support for Persons with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC) (2014 – present).

During his time at the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Otolaryngology, Dr. Myers formed connections with otolaryngologists around the world. Through his international relations work, he collaborated with the Brother's Brother Foundation to orchestrate the donation of medical equipment for doctors in Eastern Europe. Dr. Myers remains deeply involved in international affairs including membership in the International Steering Committee of the AAO-HNS. He is an honorary member of over 20 National Societies worldwide and is Honorary President of the Balkan Association of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Myers was also involved in non-medical organizations. He served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Festival Opera for 10 years (2009-2019) and was the chairman of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's Community Gardens and Greenspace Program (2010-2014). In 2022, Dr. Myers became a committee member of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and in 2023, he was nominated as the Honorary Co-Chair of the Nationality Rooms Centennial Scholarship Committee, University of Pittsburgh.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1933, Dr. Myers comes from a long line of physicians, including his grandfather Samuel Nicholas, his father, and three uncles. His father, David Myers, was the Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Myers was married to his late wife, Barbara, for 65 years. They have a daughter, Marjorie, who is an executive recruiter; a son, Jeffrey, who is the Alando Ballantyne Professor and Chairman of the Department of Head and Neck Surgery in the MD Anderson Center; and 5 grandsons.

The papers are arranged into ten series organized by subject, with personal materials separate from professional materials. File folder titles are rendered in quotation marks when they have been transcribed verbatim.
