Description
George Raymond Fitterer earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1930 and in 1938 he was hired to chair the Metallurgical Engineering Department. In 1951 he became the Dean of the Schools of Engineering and Mines and remained in that position until 1963, when he returned to teaching as the first Distinguished Professor of Metallurgy. Fitterer oversaw the construction of an Engineering Hall between Thaw Hall and the Old Mellon Institute and in 1991 wrote a history of the School of Engineering.
