Description
Group portrait of the Western University of Pennsylvania's 1890 football team. Football at the Western University of Pennsylvania began in 1889 with Burt Smyers and John Scott as organizers. Of the team members, only three had actually seen a football game played. Only one game, resulting in a loss to Shadyside Academy, was played that inaugural year. The first true season for the team began on October 11, 1890 against the Allegheny Athletic Association. Players pooled their money to purchase a football and each supplied his own uniform.
