View of the Pitt Panther motivating the crowd at Pitt Stadium. The panther was officially adopted as the University of Pittsburgh mascot on November 16, 1909 by students and alumni based on a suggestion by soon to be graduate George M. P. Baird. It was chosen because it once lived in the region, it had a long tradition of being considered noble, "Panther" alliterated well with Pitt, its gold matched a University color and no one else then used the panther as a mascot.
